Diablo 4 Item Upgrades

Upgrades to items let players increase the level of equippable items like weapons or armor, as well trinkets up to a certain amount. You can upgrade items at any NPC that accepts the appropriate currency.

Costs

Upgrading gear can increase its physical power, spell power and health (for armor and rings) or give it a bonus effect when it's in your inventory. You can make upgrade components or purchase them from vendors. They can also be obtained or dropped from other players, on the Trading Post, or as an incentive. Upgrade components can be slotted into armor, weapons and trinkets. They can also be attached to gathering tools. The majority of upgrade components can be replaced with an Upgrade Extractor. The only exception is the glyphs. They can be salvaged by using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or Ascended Salvage tool.

Upgrading an item can cost gold or Dilithium, depending on the item type. Many upgrades also require Flightstones or crests. The amount of Flightstones and Crests needed to upgrade an item is determined by the level of the item. Blizzard also sets a maximum level for upgrades. The upgrade to the highest level is expensive, especially when you're upgrading PvE gear.

Item upgrades can also change the type of ammunition a weapon uses or damage die size change its operative or unwieldy weapon's property, or change the hand requirements. Certain upgrades can alter the appearance of a weapon.
